Department Chair, History
Caroline Winterer is the William Robertson Coe Professor of History and American Studies and a professor, by courtesy, of Classics and of Education. Raised in Europe and the United States, she’s a native speaker of both English and French. She has authored or co-authored six books, including most recently How the New World Became Old: The Deep Time Revolution in America (Princeton, 2024). She has won many awards for teaching and research, taught in the Stanford Bing Overseas Studies Program in Paris, and frequently lectures for the Stanford Alumni Association. On this trip she’ll discuss topics including the shift in American art from portraits to landscapes, the impact of glaciers on New England, and the influence of fossil fuels and railroads on 19th-century American culture and art.
