Lisbon Sabbatical

Upon arrival in Lisbon, transfer to the modern and comfortable aparthotel to get settled and refresh after travel. Early arrivals may venture out on a brief guided walking tour of the area around our hotel to get orientated to our new neighborhood. In the evening, gather with fellow travelers for a welcome reception and dinner.

This morning, depart by motor coach for a guided exploration of Lisbon's three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Begin in Lisbon Baixa, the historic lower town rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, visit Jerónimos Monastery, a late 15th-century architectural masterpiece known for its intricate maritime carvings and serene cloisters; and take in the breathtaking views from Belém Tower. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant along the Tagus River before spending the afternoon at leisure. 

This morning, tour Alfama, Lisbon’s Moorish quarter, with its twisting cobbled alleys and pastel-colored houses. Continue to São Jorge Castle, a medieval fortress crowning a hill above the city. A guided visit reveals its Moorish origins, archaeological treasures, and sweeping views over Lisbon. Our final stop is at Miradouro do Recolhimento, a tranquil garden known for its panoramic vistas of old Lisbon. The afternoon and evening are at leisure to explore the city.

This morning, travel to the Setúbal Peninsula, a lively wine-producing region known for its fortified wines. Visit the historic Jose Maria da Fonseca wine caves, built in the 19th century and restored in 1923. Enjoy a guided tour through the family’s former residence and ancient wine cellars, some over 100 years old, followed by a wine-tasting lunch. This evening, experience Lisbon from a new perspective during a sunset cruise on the Tagus River. Take in unobstructed views of Belém Tower, Lisbon Cathedral, São Jorge Castle, and other landmarks as the city basks in the golden glow of twilight.

Travel to Évora, the historic capital of the Alentejo region and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This beautifully preserved town, often called an open-air museum, boasts medieval walls, a Roman temple, and monuments from various historical periods. On our guided tour, visit the haunting Chapel of Bones, built in the 16th century by Franciscan monks. The rest of afternoon and evening are at leisure to explore Évora, at our own pace.

This morning, travelers participating in the Food and Traditions Track enjoy a culinary walking tour through Lisbon. Discover local favorites, from historic shops to hidden gems, where we sample iconic Portuguese dishes. Enjoy dishes, such as salted cod, cherry liqueur and custard. Language Track participants attend their first Portuguese language lesson this afternoon.

This evening, gather for dinner and a show at a traditional fado restaurant. This melancholic Portuguese music is performed by singers accompanied by guitarists, including the distinctive 12-string Portuguese guitar.

This morning, travelers on the Active Discovery Track depart for Cabo Espichel, a dramatic cape on Portugal’s western coast known for its Jurassic cliffs. Begin with a guided tour of the 15th-century Sanctuary of Our Lady of Espichel before embarking on a coastal hike through a natural park. Along the way, view fossilized dinosaur footprints left by sauropods and theropods 150 million years ago. After our hike, enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant.

This morning, the Hidden Gems Track participants visit the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, home to a remarkable collection of Portuguese tiles spanning 500 years. Enjoy a guided tour of this historic 16th-century convent, followed by coffee and a light snack in the museum’s tiled former refectory.

This morning, depart by motor coach for the historic town of Sintra, where we explore the National Palace of Sintra, including its Blazons Hall, Swan Room, and Magpie Room. After lunch together, drive along the scenic coastal road to the fishing village of Cascais, known for its picturesque bays and colorful boats. Stop at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, before continuing through Estoril to view its famous Casino and Hotel Palacio. Return to Lisbon in the late afternoon.

Today, visit the Sanctuary of Fátima, one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Christianity, commemorating the 1917 apparition of the Virgin Mary. Continue to the nearby Batalha Monastery, a UNESCO site renowned for its stunning Gothic architecture. Conclude the day with a stop at the Nazaré cliffs and take in breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. This evening and dinner are at leisure.

Spend the day at leisure exploring Lisbon at your own pace. Consider visiting one of the city’s renowned museums, such as the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology with its impressive contemporary art collection; the National Museum of Ancient Art; the National Coach Museum; or the Museu do Fado. This evening, gather for dinner at a local restaurant.

Travel to the beautifully preserved medieval village of Óbidos, located north of Lisbon. Stroll through its cobblestone streets lined with small houses and historic churches, and admire the castle and fortified city walls.

This evening, the Food and Traditions Track has a food tour through Lisbon’s vibrant neighborhoods. Begin in Príncipe Real with a taste of Portuguese tapas before visiting one of the city’s iconic viewpoints. Continue to the lively Bairro Alto to sample fire-roasted chouriço, cheeses, and bread at a local hangout. Conclude the night with Portugal’s famous custard tarts and a glass of Port wine at a traditional tasca.

Discover Lisbon’s Estrela neighborhood, a mix of classic charm and modern energy. Visit the Basilica da Estrela, with its striking dome, intricate marble interior, and famous Nativity scene of 500 cork and terracotta figures. Climb to the dome for sweeping views, then stroll through the nearby Jardim da Estrela, one of the city’s most beautiful parks. Conclude at Mercado de Campo de Ourique, a lively market offering fresh produce and local bites, perfect for shopping or enjoying a relaxed lunch.

Active Discovery Track participants embark on a guided hike today through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, where lush green hills, ancient Roman paths, and hidden trails lead to stunning coastal views and pristine bays. This adventure showcases the natural beauty of the region. Conclude with lunch in Cascais before returning to Lisbon.

This morning, join a local speaker for a lecture on the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, the peaceful coup that ended decades of dictatorship in Portugal and ushered in democracy. Learn about its causes, key figures, and lasting impact on Portuguese society. Spend the rest of the day at leisure then gather this evening for dinner together at a local restaurant.

Spend an unforgettable long weekend exploring the highlights of Porto and the stunning Douro Valley. Activities include:

• Coimbra: Visit the UNESCO-listed Historic University of Coimbra and enjoy a group lunch in this culturally rich city en route to Porto.

• Porto tour: Discover Porto’s iconic sights, including the Dom Luis I Bridge, São Bento Station, the Majestic Café, and the famous port wine cellars, and the famous port wine cellars, where we enjoy a wine tasting.

• Douro Valley: Experience the breathtaking landscapes of this UNESCO wine region. Visit traditional wineries for tastings, savor a group lunch, and cruise along the Douro River aboard a traditional Rabelo wine boat.

Cost, included meals, and a detailed itinerary will be shared with registered participants.

Participants on the Optional Porto Weekend enjoy a leisurely morning in Porto before returning to Lisbon by coach in the afternoon. All others have the day free for independent pursuits. 

This morning, Hidden Gem Track participants visit the 17th-century Fronteira Palace, a treasured landmark just outside Lisbon’s historic center. Built as a summer residence for the 1st Marquis of Fronteira, the palace features the stunning Room of Battles, often called “the Sistine Chapel of tilework,” and exquisite grotto-like gardens adorned with some of Portugal’s finest azulejo tiles. Enjoy lunch nearby after the tour.

Take a guided tour of Queluz Palace, an 18th-century royal residence renowned for its exquisite Rococo architecture and lush formal gardens. Explore opulent interiors like the Throne Room and Music Room, adorned with gilded details, ornate furnishings, and period artwork. Conclude with a stroll through the elegant gardens, featuring fountains, statues, and a picturesque tiled canal.

Today, enjoy a hands-on cooking workshop at a charming farmhouse near Évora’s historic center. Learn about the influences and traditions of Portuguese cuisine as the owner welcomes us into her home for this immersive culinary experience.  This evening and dinner are at leisure. 

Travel to Arraiolos, a charming town renowned for its handmade woolen tapestries, known as Arraiolos carpets. Explore the whitewashed streets leading up to the medieval castle ruins, offering panoramic views of the Alentejo plains.

Spend the day at leisure exploring Lisbon at your own pace. This evening, enjoy dinner as a group at a local restaurant.

This morning, visit the Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO site celebrated for its impressive Gothic architecture and tranquil atmosphere. Explore the grand church, peaceful cloisters, and the ornate tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, Portugal’s famed star-crossed lovers. Take a stroll through the charming town center and enjoy views of the surrounding countryside. Have lunch together in Alcobaça before returning to Lisbon.

We enjoy one final day in Lisbon before gathering to toast our sabbatical at a celebratory farewell reception and dinner. 

After breakfast together in the hotel, bid farewell to Lisbon and transfer to the airport for flights home.
