Thomas Sheehan, professor of religious studies at Stanford and professor emeritus of philosophy at Loyola University Chicago, specializes in German, French, and Italian philosophy and its relation to religious questions. Before joining the Stanford faculty in 1999, he taught in Rome, New York and Chicago. He is Italian on his mother’s side and lived in Italy for over ten years, beginning in 1970. His interests include the late Roman Empire, Italian Renaissance painting, and the cultural presence of the Byzantine Empire in Ravenna. Professor Sheehan looks forward to traveling with you to Italy in the footsteps of the young Augustine, whom he describes as “an utterly fascinating and very contemporary character—a passionate lover, a sinner and a mystic.”
