Overview

A scenic walk through Spain’s history

History comes alive on this highly educational trip that takes us through the dramatic settings of Spain’s rise to glory in the 15th and 16th centuries. In landscapes both picturesque and wild, we follow trails that still bear witness to the events that dubbed Spain as one of the “empires on which the sun never sets.”

Highlights of the journey include explorations of rarely visited medieval cities, astonishing Roman monuments in Mérida, and the Renaissance architecture and twin cathedrals of Salamanca. Walk alongside popular trail guide, Peter Watson, stay in stunning paradors, and dine on delectable local cuisines: the world’s best ham in Extremadura, irresistible cherries from the Jerte valley, and the peppers and tomatoes of Castile.

Itinerary

Exploring the storied lands Extremadura and Castile and León

Begin in Guadalupe, home to the patron of the Americas, as we follow Spain’s ‘Silver Road,’ tracing the transatlantic influences of Spain and the New World through this rarely visited region. We’ll walk lesser-known trails in wilderness areas in the heart of Spain. Visit walled medieval cities, walk among Spain’s finest Roman monuments in Mérida, and explore the country’s oldest university city, Salamanca.

  • Madrid, Spain / Guadalupe

Upon arrival in Madrid, transfer to Guadalupe and check in to our hotel, located within the complex of the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe and set amid lush gardens and courtyards in exquisitely restored buildings from the 15th century.

    Included meal: Dinner
  • Guadalupe

Begin with a visit to the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe where we see the Virgin of Guadalupe, the most beloved devotional figure of the Spanish conquistadors, as well as the magnificent Zurbarán paintings in the sacristy. After lunch, take a short walk in the Sierra de Montánchez before continuing by road to the medieval town of Trujillo.
